Mackay is blessed with beautiful weather and a tropical climate. Like most tropical climates, Mackay has wet, hot summers and warm, sun-filled winters. And as expected, the coast is cooled by fresh afternoon winds and away from the coast means cold nights in winter. In the wet months from December to March most of the 1 and a half meters of annual rain falls. Over the hotter months daytime temperatures can hit 30 degrees and reaches highs of 21 degrees in winter.

Mackay weather is affected by trade winds for the majority of the year. Cool afternoon winds flowing from the north-east can sometimes freshen to cooler breezes from the south-east. Mackay is sometimes affected by cyclones and they arrive roughly once every 2 years between the months of December and April.
